📖 Final Scoring Reference
VP Track — Your running total from the scoring marker: VP earned treating clients (catharsis), publishing treatises, and reputation milestones during the game.
Reputation Track — Score VP equal to your position on the Reputation track. Then: the player farthest ahead also scores +2 VP per Published Treatise / Cured Client; the player second farthest scores +1 VP per Published Treatise / Cured Client.
Districts — Score 4 / 10 / 14 VP if you have at least one player-color Insight (placed above a District bonus slot) in 1 / 2 / 3 Vienna Districts.
Notebook Rows — Score 1 / 5 / 16 VP if you have 1 / 2 / 3 completed Notebook tile rows on your player board.
Location Tags — Score 0 / 1 / 2 / 5 / 10 / 15 VP if you have 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6 different Location tag types in play on your Notebook tiles.
Case-Study Clients — Score the VP shown on each Case-Study Client card that does not have a Grief Layer on it.
Heart-Shaped Boxes — Score 2 VP for each remaining Heart-Shaped Box. Slide in steps of 2 (e.g. 3 boxes = 6 VP).
Bright Ideas — Convert any remaining Coffee into Bright Ideas at the rate of 3 Coffee → 1 Bright Idea, then score 1 VP per Bright Idea in your supply.
Other / Modules — Any additional VP from module tiles (Journalist, Fireworks, etc.) not captured above.
About the Score Calculator
Everything you need to know about this tool
🧠
What It Does

This is a free, browser-based score calculator for Unconscious Mind — the engine-building board game set in Sigmund Freud's Vienna. It covers every end-game scoring category so you can tally a complete 1–4 player game in seconds without pencil, paper, or arithmetic.

All scoring categories are included:

  • VP Track — Your running total from the score marker, earned through catharsis, treatises, and reputation milestones during the game.
  • Reputation Track — Position VP plus the bonus awarded to the players farthest ahead (+2 or +1 VP per Published Treatise / Cured Client).
  • Districts — 4 / 10 / 14 VP for Insights placed in 1, 2, or 3 Vienna Districts.
  • Notebook Rows — 1 / 5 / 16 VP for 1, 2, or 3 completed tile rows on your player board.
  • Location Tags — A stepped 0–15 VP scale based on how many different tag types appear on your Notebook tiles.
  • Case-Study Clients — VP from each client card that carries no Grief Layer.
  • Heart-Shaped Boxes — 2 VP per remaining box, entered in steps of 2.
  • Bright Ideas — 1 VP per Bright Idea (including Coffee converted at 3:1).
  • Other / Modules — A catch-all slider for Journalist, Fireworks, or any expansion module VP not covered above.
🎩
Who It's For

Anyone sitting down to a game of Unconscious Mind who would rather spend their mental energy on the postgame debate than on manual arithmetic.

  • New players — The in-line scoring reference below each category means you never have to flip back to the rulebook during end-game scoring.
  • Experienced players — Sliders and step-buttons update totals instantly, so you can adjust a category on the fly if you misread the board.
  • Tournament or club nights — Track up to 4 players simultaneously; the Final Standings table ranks everyone automatically.
  • Solo games — Use the single-player tab to benchmark your score against previous sessions.
  • Teaching the game — The Final Scoring Reference card at the bottom of the page is a handy crib-sheet for players learning end-game scoring for the first time.
📖
How to Use It

The calculator starts with three players — add or remove tabs to match your group, then fill in each category as you score the board at the end of the game:

  1. Set player names — Click the name field at the top of each tab and type over the default.
  2. VP Track — Drag the slider to your final marker position. The range covers negative VP (possible with heavy Grief penalties in some modules).
  3. Reputation Track — Slider for your track position VP. Remember to add the treatise/client bonus separately if you finished first or second on the reputation track.
  4. Districts, Notebook Rows, Location Tags — These use step-buttons showing the exact VP values from the rulebook. Tap the value that matches your board.
  5. Case-Study Clients, Heart-Shaped Boxes, Bright Ideas, Other — Drag each slider to the correct total. Heart-Shaped Boxes move in steps of 2 automatically.
  6. Check Final Standings — The table at the bottom of the page ranks all players by total VP the moment any value changes.
  7. Reset — Use the ↺ Reset All button (requires a confirmation tap) to clear everything for a new game without refreshing the page.
🪄
Example Use Cases
  • Close game tiebreaker — Two players are within a few points. Pull up the calculator on a phone and work through each category together to be certain of the result.
  • Teaching scoring to a new player — Walk through each row in order; the sub-labels explain what each category means without opening the rulebook.
  • Tracking a solo run — Note your final score after each play to see whether your strategy is improving across sessions.
  • Comparing district vs. notebook strategies — After the game, experiment with hypothetical scores: what would the totals look like if you had hit the third district instead of the third notebook row?
  • Convention demos — A single screen shared between all players speeds up scoring at the end of a timed demo slot.
  • Online play (BGA/Tabletopia) — The platform may show your score but not the breakdown. Use this calculator alongside the virtual table to see which categories you need to improve.
⚠️
Limitations
  • No save between sessions. Scores are held in memory only — refreshing the page resets everything. Screenshot or note the Final Standings table before closing.
  • Reputation bonus requires manual judgment. The calculator provides a slider for reputation VP, but determining who finished first and second on the track — and how many treatises/clients each has — must be read from the board by the players.
  • Module VP is a catch-all. The Other / Modules slider handles any expansion or promo content not explicitly listed. Players must calculate module VP themselves and enter the total.
  • Maximum 4 players. Unconscious Mind supports 1–4 players; the calculator matches that range exactly.
  • Requires a modern browser. CSS custom properties and range inputs are used throughout; browsers older than 2019 may render incorrectly.

Game-Night Scenarios
The Notebook Specialist

You've been filing Notebook tiles all game and completed all three rows. Tap 16 on the Notebook Rows step-picker and watch your total leap. Your tablemates suddenly regret ignoring that track.

The Reputation Race

Two players are neck-and-neck on the reputation track. The one who finishes first scores +2 VP per published treatise or cured client — a gap that can swing 10–20 VP in a heavy-engine game. Make sure you enter the bonus correctly before declaring a winner.

The District Dash

You have Insights in two districts and a spare action. Do you chase the third for 14 VP instead of 10? Open the calculator mid-game and check whether the 4-point swing is worth the detour.

The Grief-Layer Surprise

Your opponent thought they had 18 VP from clients — until the table pointed out two cards with unresolved Grief Layers. Slide their Case-Study Clients value down and watch the standings flip.

The Coffee Hoard

You spent the last two rounds stockpiling Coffee. At end-game, convert at 3:1 into Bright Ideas and enter the total into the slider. Sometimes the boring resource is the winning play.

The Module Wildcard

Playing with the Journalist module? Calculate the extra VP from your clippings, type it into the Other / Modules slider, and the Final Standings update immediately — no separate notepad required.
